I want you to push yourself today…hard. Think back in time. Not just to Rene’s era, but for the eons previous. Sure, there were bright spots in time past. There were moments when the fire of the gods, the ability to penetrate the thick veil of confusion to the substance of truth behind shone brightly. We might review them, but then I’d end up digressing. But still, for all the brightest of the bright spots, before Rene’s work there was no great convergence on the path to finding the truth.
Yes, we could choose other heroes of his era. There are so many others. Ah, but the rule we’re working on, Rene’s Unpublished Rule 5; well, for me there can be no greater, no more significant dividing line over all of history past that what you’re about to reread. Unpublished Rule 5 can stand all by itself as the great before and after; darkness before, light after. Read again now, and truly push yourself…
1. Method consists entirely
2. In the order and disposition of the objects
3. Towards which our mental vision must be directed
4. If we would find out any truth.
5. We shall comply with it exactly if we
6. Reduce involved and obscure propositions
7. Step by step
8. To those that are simpler,
9. And then starting with the intuitive apprehension
10. Of all those that are absolutely simple,
11. Attempt to ascend to the knowledge of all others
12. By precisely similar steps.
So what does all that have to do with your work on the phone today as a recruiter?
This time, I’m not asking rhetorically. I’m saying it’s your turn, now. So really, what does this have to do with your work today – today mind you – as a recruiter?
Push yourself now. But how, you ask? I know, I usually do most of the pushing. We need to start shifting that burden though. You’ve come along far enough now so that the list above, broken down as it is, should be sufficient to begin to make your recruiter’s mind turn to basics, the fundamentals, and ask yourself, “Where can I get some extra bang for my buck of effort, today?”
Don’t be afraid of randomness or chaos. A list of 12 phrases, such as the one above, cannot speak to you all at once. Any given phrase may or may not connect to your work today, automatically. But, if you slow your mind down, and patiently let the words sink in, something will strike. A synapse will fire and the light of recruiting truth with strike like lightning. Hey, let’s digress!
How did mankind steal the fire of the gods, and learn to master the art of heat? The best anthropological speculation is that it really was lightning strikes that started fires and that our ancestors learned the art of fire by accepting the gift of the heavens. We are a Promethean lot, aren’t we?
Well, you too! Pretend with me now. Rene, while I hate to admit it, is actually dead. As a dead man, he has for me ascended to the very heavens and has his own constellation of stars in the sky. No, he’s no god, but he surely is a transcendent soul. And, he surely has the power to send us the lightning strike of applied, practical truth. Read the list above, again, now.
There are 12 bolts of lightning there. Which one bolt strikes your mind, your recruiting mind today?
Okay, here is mine, now. It’s # 11. Actually, it’s just the one word “ascend.” That’s what I want you to do today. I want you to ascend. And maybe even just once, in just one call with either a candidate or a client. Ascend. Rise higher. Find a higher truth. You’re a recruiter, after all. That’s what you do. You build higher truth, one person, one career, one position or hire at a time.
What a glorious profession you perform. Now, find your lighting, and perform better today than you have until now.
