Writing. I’m trying, but obviously failing, to not mention reading and arithmetic while I’m on the topic. Discipline Scopelliti, keep your focus.
Okay, that was a close one. No math. No reading. No literature or movies…just writing and only writing about business. Okay…
So what’s the magic; what’s the big deal about writing? Answer me this:
Question: What’s the very first success that comes to mind?
Quick, don’t hesitate. Yes, write it down!
Got that done? Excellent.
Now, quick as 1, 2 & 3:
1. How did you win?
Write down your answer.
2. What particular strength did you employ?
Write down your answer.
3. What special aspect of your steps to victory must you immediately repeat?
Write down your answer.
Now, look at your three answers. Can you see that they’re connected, that they build upon each other? If you’d given a different answer to question 1, answers 2 & 3 would also have been different. If you’re like most business people, the insights actually started to strike, though, over question 3. How many times have you said, or heard said, “That was so successful we never did it again!”?
But, why did it matter that you write down your answers? My hope is this. My hope is that, in writing down your answers, you’ve actually experienced the creative, discovery process that writing empowers, for yourself in just this tiny exercise.
We’ll tackle this writing question again tomorrow. Here, let’s simply make this one point. When you write, you build. You build your thinking. You dig in. You dig down. You go places you won’t go with otherwise. Each written thought is a stepping stone across the pond of discovery. Each point grows out of the previous point, and leads, surprisingly, to the next. In writing, you discover. And in your mind, discovery equals construction.
Got it?
